While we tend to think of blooming annuals and perennials that attract pollinators to your yard, there are many trees, shrubs, and vines that can also draw their attention (and many benefits). Here are some of our favorite shrubs and vines that we encourage you to mix in to your Pollinator Preferred garden.

SHRUBS

Abelia 'Kaleidoscope'

Bright, golden yellow variegation on medium green leaves along with brilliant red stems creates a striking kaleidoscope of color.  A low, compact shrub that works well as a foundation plant, low hedge, or for us in patio containers.  Plant a bunch as a ground cover or for dramatic year-round color.  Evergreen.

Buddleia 'Butterfly Bush'

As it's common names implies, Butterfly Bush is loved by butterflies.  Spectacular summer color from lightly fragrant, with dark violet-purple flower spikes.  A fast growing shrub that works well as a foundation shrub, an accent plant or as a background in borders.  May die back to ground in cold winters, but emerges vigorously in spring.  Deciduous.

Hebe 'Variegated'

A compact evergreen shrub with spikes of purple flowers in early summer.  It's attractive variegated grey green leaves with creamy margins makes it stand out.  Ideal as a low hedge or container plant, Hebe attracts butterflies and hummingbirds alike. Evergreen.

Prunus laurocerasus 'English Laurel'

A large evergreen shrub with dense, erect branches and handsome bright green foliage.  Tiny spring flowers have a sweet fragrance that attracts pollinators. A popular choice for formally pruned hedges or privacy screens.  English Laurel also tolerates salt spray. Evergreen.

Ligustrum japonicum 'Waxed Leafed Privett'

A versatile evergreen hedge material enjoys a compact habit and glossy green foliage that responds well to regular pruning.  Displays a profusion of fragrant, white blooms in spring that the bees just love.  Useful as an informal hedge, screen or windbreak.  Performs well in containers.  Evergreen. 

 

VINES

Lonicera 'Honeysuckle'

An excellent vine to use as a cover for a trellis, arbor or fending.  Honeysuckle also performs well when pruned to form a dense shrub-like shape.  Purple to deep pink buds open to sweetly fragrant golden yellow tubular flowers loved by hummingbirds throughout the summer.  Evergreen. 

Trachelospermum 'Star Jasmine'

A beautiful fine prized for it's very fragrant, star-shaped, white flowers, and blanket of think, dark green foliage.  Plant near your window where the fragrance can be enjoyed.  Train on posts, walls or trellises, or allow to trail along as a ground cover.  A superb summer container plant.  Evergreen.
