Osteospermum blooms

Last week we introduced our Container Collection - featuring unique blooms and foliage to refresh your summer containers. We want to highlight a few more of our favorites from this collection this week. Plants with bold colors and textures that add tremendous visual interest.

Alternathera Red Thread

  • 'Red Thread' has interesting slender-leaved foliage in shades of deep burgundy.
  • A single plant makes a mound about 8 inches tall and 14 inches wide.
  • Use 'Red Thread' at the base of taller plants in the border to provide vibrant color echoes or contrast.
Alternathera Little Ruby (left) and Red Thread (right) can both add great contrast to any container design

Alternathera Little Ruby

  • Little Ruby Alternathera is a great, low-maintenance plant that adds beautiful burgundy and purple foliage to your containers.
  • Its compact growth habit offers an alternative to traditional blooming plants.
  • Another great feature is that Little Ruby requires no deadheading and little maintenance.
  • This tough little plant is heat and humidity tolerant and has a low moisture requirement.
Pair the Lysmachia Creeping Jenny Gold (left) with a Wilma Goldcrest Cypress (right) for a "thriller" and "spiller" combination that really shines!

Lysimachia Creeping Jenny Gold

  • Golden Creeping Jenny is a low-growing evergreen ground cover with rounded, golden yellow leaves.
  • In summer, it produces many cup-shaped, bright yellow flowers.
  • This cultivar can withstand damper soils than many other types of ground covers and can even tolerate limited foot traffic.
  • Grow in moist, but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Soil should not dry out in the summer.
  • Full sun or partial shade, but the color really pops in full sun!

Wilma Goldcrest Cypress

  • This evergreen chartreuse plant has lemon-scented foliage!
  • Its tall and slender shape makes it a great "thriller" for containers
  • Keep the soil evenly moist with good drainage.
The silver foliage of both the Hellchrysum Licorice (left) and Crysocephalum Desert Flame (right) provide a nice contrast to darker foliage plants or pottery.

Chrysocephalum 'Desert Flame'

  • This plant has small yellow flowers that are "cute as a button"
  • 'Desert Flame' has interesting light green foliage with silver edges.
  • Crysocephalum's flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
  • It likes the sun, and the soil can dry out a bit between waterings.

Helichrysum Licorice

  • The fuzzy, silvery-white foliage is quite unique.
  • Its cascading habit makes a perfect "spiller" for your container.
  • Helichrysum Licorice prefers sun or afternoon shade
  • The soil can dry out a bit between waterings
These and the other Osteospermums in our Container Collection are stunning in containers. But don't forget they make great cut-flowers for bouquets.

Osteospermum 'Flower Power™ Spider White'

  • African Daisy with unique petals that shaped liked spoons
  • These long lasting flowers bloom spring to fall. Remove spent flowers for more blooms.
  • Butterflies love these flowers.
  • Enjoys the sun. Keep evenly moist.

These plants and the rest of our Container Collection are looking beautiful now in the garden center. Add them to your garden beds and containers to squeeze more out of summer!
