Black-Eyed Susan Vine (Thunbergia alata) is a vigorous twining annual in most Willamette Valley gardens, producing masses of bright orange, yellow or cream trumpet-shaped flowers with a dark "eye" that bloom from summer into fall and look great on trellises, fences or in containers. Plant in full sun to part shade in well-drained fertile soil, water regularly, deadhead to prolong bloom, and note that it is frost-tender so it's usually grown as an annual here or brought indoors for winter in protected spots; it also attracts hummingbirds and other pollinators.
